Job Overview: The office of Boston City Council President Liz Breadon seeks an experienced and motivated Policy Director to lead legislative research, policy development, and strategic analysis across a broad range of municipal issues. The Policy Director will play a central role in shaping the Council President’s legislative agenda, supporting weekly City Council proceedings, and conducting research on policy relevant to the residents of Allston-Brighton and Boston.
This is a full-time position, reporting directly to the Council President and her Chief of Staff. Work may be hybrid, but in-person availability at City Hall is required on Wednesdays during weekly Council meetings and as the City Council schedule dictates.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leverage a deep understanding of public policy and local issues to draft and file Council legislation, including hearing orders, resolutions, and ordinances
- Conduct research in advance of Council meetings and hearings, review the weekly Council meeting agenda to brief the President and team on upcoming Council business
- Research ongoing policy issues, provide analysis, and deliver policy briefs to the President and team to inform policy decisions
- Coordinate with other Council offices, Council Central Staff, and the Office of the Clerk to prepare for weekly meetings of the City Council and Council hearings
- Act as main point of contact with relevant City departments, policy professionals, subject matter experts, and community stakeholders to create and advance policy relevant to the Council President’s priorities for Allston-Brighton
- Assist in writing content for internal and external communications (press releases, newsletters, emails, website, social media, etc.)
- Continuously monitor local, state, and federal news and follow active legislation at the City and State level via City Council news subscriptions, social media, and news alerts
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, law, or other relevant field; advanced degree (MPA, MPP, JD) preferred
- At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in government, public policy, legislative research, advocacy, or a related field
- Familiarity with legislative processes and/or parliamentary procedure; experience working in a legislative body or executive government office, ideally in Boston or Massachusetts
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills, with the ability to draft clear, accurate legislative documents such as hearing orders, resolutions, and ordinances
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience coordinating across multiple stakeholders, including elected officials, staff, government agencies, and community members
- Boston residency required; residency in, or deep familiarity with, the Allston-Brighton community strongly preferred
Salary Range: $80,000-90,000/year
