Company: Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General
Deputy State Solicitor
Executive Bureau
Office of the State Solicitor
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for an exceptional, highly motivated, and experienced appellate litigator to join her Office of the State Solicitor as a Deputy State Solicitor.
Primary Duties: The State Solicitor represents the Attorney General’s commitment to the highest quality of appellate advocacy throughout the Attorney General’s Office. The State Solicitor heads the Office of the State Solicitor (OSS), the primary appellate resource for the AGO, helping Assistant Attorneys General in every Bureau to develop appellate strategy, draft and refine briefs, and prepare for oral argument in state and federal appellate courts. OSS also tracks appeals handled by the AGO to ensure consistent legal positions; handles select appeals presenting complex or novel issues of particular importance to the Commonwealth; advises the Attorney General on requests to appeal adverse decisions; leads the Commonwealth’s amicus practice, including both authoring amicus briefs and advising the Attorney General on whether to join multi-state amicus briefs drafted by other states; and advises (and sometimes extensively collaborates with) trial-level teams in cases likely to result in appeals. The Deputy State Solicitor will work closely with the State Solicitor in carrying out OSS’s mission.
Position Requirements: A minimum of five years of relevant litigation experience (which may include judicial clerkships) and Massachusetts bar membership is required. Significant appellate experience, thorough knowledge of appellate procedure, and familiarity with state government practice areas strongly preferred. Significant trial-level experience, particularly experience involving extensive writing, will also be considered. Strong oral and written communication skills, a strong ability and desire to edit appellate briefs on deadline, and excellent organizational skills are essential.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, including historically marginalized communities, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment. Applicants should be highly motivated and be able to work successfully in a fast-paced public sector law office.
Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt
Salary: $90,000 to $117,879, commensurate with JD year and experience.
Application Process: To apply for this position, visit the AGO jobs portal at www.mass.gov/ago/employment to register and create a profile, upload your cover letter and resume, and submit an application. Candidates may only apply directly using the AGO’s online Employment and Recruitment jobs portal. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.
